How to Make Crockpot Sloppy Joes

Step 1: Brown the ground beef. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it into very small pieces as it cooks. Drain the excess grease.

Step 2: Add the ingredients. Transfer the cooked ground beef to your crockpot. Add the brown sugar, mustard, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, and water.

Step 3: Stir everything together. Mix well until the beef is coated with the sauce and the ingredients are evenly combined.

Step 4: Cook in the crockpot. Cover and cook on low for 2–3 hours, stirring well before serving. Make sure the beef mixture reaches a safe temperature of 160°F (71°C).

Step 5: Serve and enjoy. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto hamburger buns or slices of bread. Serve with chips, French fries, and pickles.
Important Recipe Notes

- Drain the ground beef well: Remove excess grease after browning to keep the sloppy joe sauce from becoming too oily.
- Break the ground beef into very small crumbles while cooking so it is easier to scoop onto hamburger buns.
- Adjust the sauce to your taste: Add a little more brown sugar for a sweeter sauce or mustard for a stronger tangy flavor.
- If the mixture looks too thick, stir in a little water. If it seems too thin, let it cook uncovered briefly while keeping an eye on it.
- Give the mixture a good stir so the sauce coats the beef evenly.
- Serve warm: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto hamburger buns or bread just before serving to help keep them from getting soggy.
- Refrigerate leftover beef mixture in an airtight container within 2 hours of cooking and use within 3–4 days. Reheat to 165°F (74°C) before serving.
